His name is Rene Lalique; his glass and crystals he has produced are watched admirably as if they were a piece of art work in 40 museums in all of the continents in the world, exhibitions are held and artistic skidding competition which is one of the most aesthetic sport branches for his honor. In Wengen in Alsace Region where Rene Lalique first worked, his museum will be opened in 2010. Besides original works to be taken from artist’s other collections, 200 pieces of crystal object have already been produced to be exhibited at the museum. We memorialize this man who once created his works by being inspired from nature as sculptor of light. Legendary starts with the birth of Rene Lalique in Ay, the region of France famous for vine, in April 6, 1860.
Even at the age of 12, young Rene who designed his notebooks and books with the pictures of flowers, bees, wet flies and butterflies had to work at the age of 16 after the death of his father. He was given as apprentice to one of the competent jewelry dealer at those times in Paris. Apprentice was skilled; he left his master in a very brief time by comprehending delicacies of art. He would use ivory, horn and half-value stones and combine them perfectly with gold and silver.
When Rene Lalique participated in 1900 Paris World Fair, he was in his best times as jeweler king who was adorned with awards. However, he abandoned gold and valuable stones in 1902. He discovered another value: Glass!
He would flow, tarnish and give shape to the glass and mix glass and ice… In short, he would experiment everything on the glass. Coty whose odor our grandmothers will remember well requested that he produce bottles for their perfume in 1907. Coty was followed by perfumers such as Roger & Gallet, Haubigard and Guerlain. These elegant perfume bottles created by Lalique at those times find purchasers as antique pieces at astronomic prices from all over the world. However, Lalique wouldn’t be contended with perfume bottles. He also produced chandeliers, candelabra, lamps, fountains, furniture and doors. He likes working on great glass.
Thus, he became one of the great masters of Art Nouveau. In the following, he passed to Art-Deco with the same mastership at the age of 50s. He adorned dining rooms of Normandie and Wagons-Lits Orient Express, which were the luxurious excursion ships at those times. He converted gates of a Japanese Prince’s Place into car mascots between the years of 1925 and 1930.
When he passed away at the age of 89 in 1945, he left back 4000 pieces of art work, for which collectors fight one another today. With his son Marc, crystal period started in Lalique legend. The material, Marc, who had been closest colleague of his father since 1922, likes mostly, was crystal. He maintained legend his father has started with crystal. As the time went by, he developed technique for using crystal with its cleanest condition and by making it frozen. Like his father, he admired nature. Inspiring source for his works became nature. Animal world started by Rene Lalique was eveloped and enriched with Marc. Marc’s animals were more stylized and purified. Furthermore, legged glass materials were also the flied in which Mac was interested.
After 1960s, Marc became detached from natural and realistic adornments as much as he found opportunity and made his works concentrated upon effects inherent in crystal. He produced stylized pieces with plant patterns carved on and adorned with ice. When he died in 1977, he left a daughter who was skilled with Lalique line becoming ecole: Marie-Claude Lalique.
Lalique line was genetically hereditary of Marie-Claude who grew up as theater decorator.… She became the owner of Lalique collection which was so rich that nobody could reach by collecting small bottles that were left by her grandfather and wanted to be put into the bin by his father when she was a little girl. When she took over the work, she became both manager and designer.
Considering the origin of Lalique legend, Marie-Claude tended to jewelers. Her material was half-precious materials. However, her death would draw the adornments, whereas the grand child would directly give shape to materials. She was also inspired by nature. She reflected animal world onto glass material. She would mix brightness with mat and color and also would contribute contemporariness to Lalique in every field in our world. In order to target at large mass, Marie-Claud entered into sports world. The sport branch that would fit best to the name of Lalique could be certainly artistic skidding which is the most elegant sports. Trophee Lalique, which was first held in 1989, has been maintained in art fields up to our dates.
We mustn’t forget that Rene Lalique dressed the best perfumes of those times with elegant vials. Vial of Nina Ricci’nin L’Air du Temps has become classical with its bottle as much as its odor. The cap of the crystal bottle was closed with dove partners kissing one another. When coming to the years of 90s, thanks to attempts and creativity of Marie Claude, one more page was also opened in the world of Lalique and in 1992, the first perfume bearing the name of Lalique reached to perfume consumers. This perfume was followed by the women and men odors: As for the odor for women, among were Lalique Songe, Perles De Lalique and Lalique Aphrodite, whereas, as for men’s odors, Lalique Samourai, Lalique White and Lalique Athlete were created…
As I have already mentioned in the beginning of the writing, Lalique is in our lives from adornments and odors to art and sports as the symbol of beauty and elegance, though he has been cut from the family by being sold to Art et Fragrance, luxury Swedish firm in previous years.
It is preferred for the special days
According to the information we received from the executives of Luxurios, one of the representatives of Lalique in Turkey, the Lalique has been known for a long time and particularly is a popular and demanded brand in Turkey. When going to ask for a girl in marriage, there are many people who prefer lalique to put candy in. There is not so much interest for the limited edition products the Lalique put on the market every year in Turkey. However, there have been collectors who particularly produce Lalique perfume bottle. They purchase from us as well as from abroad. The new designs do not draw as much attention as those of Rene Lalique in Turkey, but they draw more attention according to the old design.
The old designs get in favor in Turkey
According to the information we received from the executives of Prestige, one of the representatives of Lalique in Turkey, Lalique is number one in crystal throughout the world. It has a very special technique. The limited edition products are generally produced as 99 in number and these are included in the antique group. The value of the antique Lalique objects is averagely 20 000. The vase with woman is a limited object which was sold throughout the world the most. The Lalique elephant objects are one of the many sold products group. Since the people in Turkey are curious about the history and the old, there are more Lalique fanciers than you estimate in turkey. The newly added and a bit modernized products do not get in favor. The old designs are demanded more.
